Why we wear cufflinks
Cufflinks can be worn for many different reasons. Below we'll explain why this classic piece of men's jewellery is a must-have in your wardrobe!
A little history of the cufflink
In the 17th and 18th century cufflinks were only available to the elite. Cufflinks were made of solid silver or gold in this period, which made it a luxury piece of jewellery and not affordable for the 'common' people. Later, in the 19th century, precious metals were introduced, and cufflinks were made from them. From then on, the cufflink became available to a larger public.

Cufflinks as jewellery
Cufflinks are still a real piece of jewellery today, just like they were in the 17th century. Nowadays there are many different types of cufflinks. For every occasion or type of person you can find a cufflink.
If you want to close the cuffs of your shirt with striking cufflinks, you will give your look a chic look. This is partly due to the history that the cufflink carries with it. If you don't want to stand out too much you can also choose fabric cufflinks in the colour of your shirt or suit. Fabric cufflinks are just big enough to close the cuffs of your shirt and therefore stand out a lot less.
If you don't have a shirt that's suitable for cufflinks, but you do want your cufflinks to have that luxurious look, there are also so-called button covers nowadays. These are cufflinks for a 'normal' shirt. They cover the button that's already attached to your cuff.
Wearing cufflinks functionally
That cufflinks are functional is a well-known fact. They keep the cuffs of your shirt closed, provided the shirt has double cuffs.
When to wear cufflinks?
Cufflinks are often worn with a suit. Under the suit you wear a shirt with double cuffs which must be closed by cufflinks. A suit is often worn during a festive or formal occasion. You can adjust your cufflinks to the type of occasion or your hobby. This way you never miss the mark.
